The Counselling and Human Development Centre organized a seminar on the 24th of April, 2019 to educate students on how to effectively and productively balance their academic and social life.
The seminar which was held in the New Pavilion at the faculty of Arts had in attendance distinguished guests and students of the university.
The coordinator of the seminar Mr. Emeka Livinus started by explaining that the counselling centre is a home away from home and it was established to help students with problems they can’t handle individually.
He explained further that to access the counselling centre students don’t need to book an appointment and that the centre has counselling experts who don’t joke with confidentiality.
The coordinator of the centre, Dr E.O Omole in her opening speech educated the students on how their ability to understand and balance their academic and social life makes them more enriched as an individual to proffer solution to the ever dynamic issues the contemporary society is characterized with.
Barrister Femi Olojede who was the guest speaker elaborated theme of the seminar.
He emphasised the need for prioritization, time management, having a vision and setting goals to prevent an imbalance between academic and social life.
He concluded his speech by advising the students about friendship.
“Your tomorrow is a reflection of who your friends are right now and they have the ability to make or mar you”.
After the question and answer session, Mrs. Olugbenga explained that the Counselling and Human development Centre is mandated by the NUC (National university commission) to provide counselling service for students in order to produce qualified and competitive graduates.
She explained further that students are free to share their thoughts, desires, concerns, doubts, incapabilities and abilities with them while emphasising that whatever thoughts or problems shared with the counsellors would remain a secret.
“We have been having this kind of seminar in the past and we will still have more this year. This is just the first out of five”, she said as she urged the students present to pass the good news of the Counselling and Human Development Centre to their friends in need.
