By Olutaiwo Ayobami
The Agrarian Club, Federal University Oye-Ekiti is set to begin her projects soon. This was made known in an interview with the club’s president.
The Agrarian Club which was an initiative of Agricultural Sciences Education students, came into existence in 2016 for operation in both Oye and Ikole campuses and Prof. Adegbitan, the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture was made the club’s pioneer patron.
“While considering the development of agriculture in Nigeria, it could be noted that it has gotten to a state of jeopardy. People no longer go into farming unlike in the days of our forefathers where it was their major occupation”.
“This act towards agriculture in the modern day has made Nigerians to lose the prestige they once held amidst peers in agricultural system”.
“Therefore, the club aims at securing the future of Nigerians through the provision of substantial foods and proffering a panacea to the problem of unemployment in the country.”
“It also aims at calling to order the lost farmers and those who, in one way or the other, have developed interest in farming activities, especially the students”.
This was narrated by the club’s President, who is one of the co-founders, Adebayo Femi Sunday, a 300level student of Agricultural Science and Education.
In addition, he emphasised that the essence of this club is to make sure that those people in the field of Agriculture are being motivated to go into agricultural processes as well as “teach them the way of earning a living in agriculture instead of wasting much of their time in seeking a white collar jobs”
Speaking on the achievements of the club so far, he said “initially, there was no courage to go on with the processes since the Club has not been well recognised, but now that the school management is fully involved, we now have the ground”.
“Therefore, we have brainstormed and come together as a group to function as expected. I can now boast of students doing well in agriculture today. Some students already have their personal farmlands where lots of farming activities take place. What is needed is people of like minds to join the club”, he added.
Speaking to UCJ FUOYE, Oyeleke Adekunle Lawrence, a member of the club said, “this agricultural club has come to stay.”
He quickly added that “although it has been established years back, there was no legal backup then so its activities were not smooth. Now the club is now fully recognized with agricultural ethics and rules guiding its operations”.
“In the club we have focus and we also have serious minded people. Those that are ready to withstand whatever agricultural challenges they face” he continued while noting that “those that have passion for farming are needed to join.
The union is open to everyone irrespective of the academic field one finds him/herself. So far, there is passion for doing what we do”.
“Agriculture is not just for a specific group who study it at school, it’s for every individual whose interest falls in this category”, he said.
“Lastly, this club tends to correct the misperception people have towards agriculture in the country. Some believe it to be for the illiterates while others believe it to be for the elders around. The fact is that agriculture is a process and so it is subject to every like minded individuals”.
“Students should look up to building themselves now that they are still in school in agriculture, so by the time they graduate, they will be self independent and be of use to the society at large”, he concluded.
